The Missouri Western State University Law Enforcement Academy is certified by the Missouri Department of Public Safety, Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.

The academy exceeds the State of Missouri’s minimum basic training requirements for peace officer certification and results in eligibility for a POST certificate.

Missouri Western State University’s commander, Joseph N. King has been in law enforcement for 29 years working for the St. Joseph Police Department, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and Platte County Sheriff’s Office. King explained the Academy’s goals.

“The Law Enforcement Academy’s Mission requires us to recruit those who want to serve their community with distinction and to provide premier basic recruit training so that agencies looking to hire our Recruits receive employees with the anchor of knowledge and skill necessary to carry forward into a law enforcement career.”

There is financial assistance available for people looking to start a career in law enforcement.

One way of financial assistance is when agencies hire a recruit, pay their tuition/fees and pay them hourly while attending the academy.

“We offer both full-time and part-time training options for the more than 800-hours of the Missouri Western Law Enforcement Academy.” Commander King said.

The training for the Law Enforcement Academy includes skills such as interpersonal skills, cultural diversity, intermediate weapons, firearms, first responder training, emergency vehicle operations and more.

The skills in the law enforcement academy prepare recruits for their future and area police agencies often recruit from Missouri Western’s Law Enforcement Academy.

“So far the ethics and professionalism are top notch coming from all the instructors. The physical portion of the academy exceeded my expectations in that they don’t slack on striving to get us where we need to be” said Charlie Bloss, a recruit in the law enforcement academy.”

For those who are interested in Public Service as a Law Enforcement Officer, they can contact Joseph King at 816–271–5843 or via email: academy@missouriwestern.edu. Charlie Bloss went on to explain why his time in the academy has already been beneficial.

“I’ve already met some of the nicest people and we are a relatively laid back group but we aren’t afraid to dig deep. The Commander is very devoted to ensuring we all walk across that stage in june. The academy is a very well rounded program that I’m honored to be a part of” Charlie Bloss said.

If you are interested or have any questions be sure to reach out to the commander, Joseph King. The law enforcement academy is a devoted program that will push recruits towards success.
